Ilfracombe C of E Junior School
Ilfracombe Junior School is the largest primary school in Devon with just over 400 pupils. The school has been actively pursuing a sustainability policy since 2001. There is an organic garden which produces food for the kitchen and waste from dinners is composted for the garden.
The windows in the 1940s former Grammar School building have been double glazed which reduced the energy loss by 30% and improvement of roofing insulation reduced the energy loss by 40%. Low energy bulbs and radiator thermostats have also been installed. In 2008 a 33.3kW solar PV system was installed to generate electricity for the school and a 3.3kW solar thermal system was fitted to heat water for the kitchen.
