Feed-in Tariffs

Incentive for renewable electricity generation

The feed-in tariff (FIT) is an incentive which makes the installation of renewable energy systems that generate electricity very attractive.  The technologies supported are:

  • Solar Photovoltaic (PV)
  • Wind Turbines
  • Hydroelectricity
  • Anaerobic Digestors
  • Micro combined heat and power (CHP)

The FIT rates vary between the different technologies and the sizes of the system.  Once you have a system, the tariff you are paid increases with inflation.  The level of the tariff for new systems may be reviewed at least once a year.  The feed-in tariff is paid for a duration of 20 years

The renewable system will benefit you in three ways:

  • Generation Tariff  –  you are paid for every kWh of electricity you generate
  • Export Tariff – you will receive a further payment for electricity exported to the electricity grid.  Typically for a domestic system, it is estimated that 50% of the electricity generated is exported to the grid
  • Electricity Bill Savings – electricity generated by the system can be consumed for free.
